Shift leave
Shift leave is calculated and credited as it is earned. We calculate shift leave based on the shift leave clause in the collective contracts. This reads as follows:
“Extra leave for shift workers – “shift work” is defined as the same work performed by two or more workers or two or more successive sets or groups of workers working successive periods.”
The basis we do our calculation on is following these rules: (this is taken from the collective contracts)
(a) The shift work performed each day:
- -
-
extends over at least 13 continuous hours, and
is performed by two or more workers working rostered shifts,
and
the shift involves at least two hours of work performed outside the hours of 8am to 5pm and these hours are not overtime.
(b) The shift work does not extend over at least 13 continuous hours each day but at least four hours of the shift work are performed outside the hours of 8am. to 5pm.
(c) The shift work performed:
- is rostered and rotating, and
- extends over at least 15 continuous hours each day, and
- not less than 40% of the hours worked in the period covered
by the roster cycle is outside the hours of 8am to 5pm The following additional leave is granted:
Number of qualifying shifts per annum
Number of days additional leave
121 or more
96-120
71-95 3 46-70 2 21-45 1
On the completion of 21 qualifying shifts, one days shift leave will be credited to your shift leave balance. On the completion of 46 qualifying shifts another days shift leave will be credited to your balance. This accumulates for your annual leave anniversary year and then the accumulator for the shifts starts again at 1.
