All abnormal results are flagged according to the test reference interval. Some tests have critical limits and results outside critical limits will be phoned to the listed patient location or requesting physician. Please refer to the Laboratory Phone Out Limits Policy for a list of critical results that will be phoned.
It is the responsibility of the Registrar, SMO or Consultant to interpret and acknowledge test results in the Clinical Work Station (CWS). Many reports will have test related comments to assist interpretation. Discipline specific Pathologists are available for clinical consultation. Please contact the laboratory for this service.
Occasionally the laboratory may amend results that have already been available on the CWS. This may be as a result of having received notification that a specimen had been mis-labelled or due to technical or quality control issues in the laboratory. Before re-issuing amended results the laboratory is required to notify all known recipients by phone that erroneous results have been issued. The time and date of this notification shall appear on the report as well as a comment listing the erroneous results that were reported.
Waikato DHB Laboratories are funded to perform diagnostic laboratory testing on hospital inpatients, outpatients attending Waikato DHB clinics and provide a specialist laboratory service to other laboratories within Waikato DHB.
All pre-employment, immigration or self-initiated testing costs MUST be paid for prior to the testing being performed. Please present to the laboratory phlebotomy service, Reception A, Level 1 MCC, to enable this.
All Health and Safety requests (e.g. needle stick injury, MRSA screening) must be authorised by the H&S physician.
Only staff with approved competency may perform POCT.
The laboratory POCT co-ordinator can be contacted during normal work hours on 021 471 825. Out of hours contact the main laboratory.
Please note Blood bank (NZBS) is a separate organisation.
