Specimen transport:
All specimens must be transported in specimen biohazard bags. The form goes into the outer sleeve; specimen inside the zip lock bag.
If sending blood cultures via the Lamson (pneumatic tube) system, ensure that each blood culture bottle is placed in a white plastic Lamson blood culture carrier before placing them into the Lamson canister. This is to prevent the bottles being damaged when the Lamson carrier arrives at the laboratory station.
Blood gas samples may be sent via the Lamson system. These samples must be transported immediately and should not be transported on ice. Please ensure the needle is removed from the syringe before transportation.
Blood samples for special coagulation testing and platelet function must not be sent via the Lamson system as this mode of transport results in platelet activation which may interfere with results.
