New Zealand Pharmaceutical Schedule
The Pharmaceutical Schedule can be accessed from PHARMAC's website http://www.pharmac.health.nz.
If the medicine cannot be found in the Pharmaceutical Schedule or its updates, it is not subsidised for dispensing in the community. Please ask for assistance from pharmacy if in doubt.
The Hospital Medicines List (HML) is also available on the Pharmac website and details what we can and cannot use within hospitals. If a medicine is not listed in the HML we need to apply for a Named Patient Pharmaceutical Assessment or to have the medicine added to the HML. Further details are available on the Pharmac website, or talk to your pharmacist for advice.
Special Authority
Some medications are only subsidised if a "Special Authority" number has been granted. Please ensure Special Authority application has been submitted prior to writing the discharge prescription.
On-line applications: The preferred option for application is via the on-line process as this means you get an immediate response. Prescribers need to be registered to apply on-line. You should have been given application forms during your orientation. Ask your ward pharmacist about the process if you have not been registered, or you can find details on the pharmacy page of the intranet about how to register. Please register as soon as possible and not wait until you rotate to an area/ward where you need it.
The Pharmaceutical Schedule will indicate whether a specialist needs to make the application or it can be done by “any relevant practitioner”. If the latter, this means any prescriber involved in the patient’s care.
