Prescribing Guide
Pharmacy Services produces a Prescribing Guide booklet. The booklet provides helpful hints and guidance about funding for your patients’ medicines and to help you avoid making some of the more common prescribing errors.
The latest booklet is available on the pharmacy page of the intranet. Printed copies are also available from the Liaison Pharmacist.
Topics covered in the Prescribing Guide include:
1. Prescribing standards e.g. abbreviations list
2. Prescribing on the national medication chart
3. Writing outpatient prescriptions (handwritten and electronically generated)
4. Writing Controlled Drug (CD) prescriptions
5. Warfarin charting
6. Discharge summaries
7. Access and funding of medications (e.g. Hospital Medicine List (HML), antibiotic
prescribing, New Zealand Community Pharmaceutical Schedule, Special Authority (SA) numbers, Named Patient Pharmaceutical Assessment (NPPA), supply of unregistered medicines, outpatient prescription charges).
