1. Overview 1.1 Purpose:
Procedure
Adult Fasting / Nil by mouth Pre-anaesthesia
To ensure fasting recommendations are adhered to, promoting patient safety when a regional or general anaesthesia or sedation is required.
1.2 Patient / client group:
This procedure applies to adult patients undergoing the above.
2. 53B22BClinical Management 2.1 Procedure:
Fluids:
 Patients should be encouraged to drink clear oral fluids, including water, pulp-free juice and black (milk-less) tea/coffee* up to 2 hours before elective surgery
 Fluids NOT allowed are: o Milk
o Fizzy/Carbonated drinks
o Alcohol
 Diabetic patients should avoid sugary drinks
 As theatre list order sometimes change, this effectively means:
o 0600 hours for patients having morning surgery o 1100 hours for patients having afternoon surgery
Solids:
 A patient should consume no food in the six hours prior to their surgery.
 As theatre list order sometimes change, this effectively means:
o Midnight /2400 hours for patient having morning surgery
o 0700 hours for patients having afternoon surgery
 Failure to adhere to this procedure may mean that a patient’s operation will not proceed as planned.
