How do we measure the learning environment for medical staff?
At Waikato DHB we use the Postgraduate Hospital Educational Environment Measure (PHEEM), designed to measure the postgraduate clinical learning and teaching educational environment for hospital-based junior doctors (Roff et al, 2005). The learning environment is important to the organisation and to your experience. There was no reason that this should not be extended to include all medical staff within the DHB where clinical teaching – planned or otherwise – takes place. More recently it has been found to work well in evaluating the learning environment in General Practice (Anderson et al, 2015). Completing the 40-item instrument based on a 5-point Likert Scale, will take approximately 5 minutes. This measure has been in development since 2001, published in 2005 and has been validated by the original authors as well as others internationally. It will be used by the Clinical Education & Training Unit (CETU) to report on the learning environment. Your responses are anonymous.
‘it is in the everyday workplace – where faculty members conduct their clinical, research and teaching activities, and interact with faculty, colleagues and students – that learning most often takes place’ (Steinert, 2010, p407)
We urge you to complete this questionnaire every three months (PGY1 & 2) and at least every six months for everyone else, regardless of whether you are moving to a new area.
